For years I’ve heard that if you are active, you are less likely to get sick. Apparently, there is some truth to that statement. A recent ACSM journal article revealed that an active lifestyle could help combat the effects of a cold.
Studies also support the notion that regular exercise - coupled with getting sleep, eating right and practicing good hygiene - will indeed help you decrease you symptoms and likelihood of getting sick. Most of the studies have determined that regular exercise might not stop a cold, but it will help decrease the longevity of the illness and lessen the symptoms. So, if you needed an additional motivator to hit the gym, think about how your workout will help combat a cold.
